Some of our recent jobs showing the various tree maintenance and removal work we offer our clients:
Close to the house!
Birch tree pruning in Bletchley, Milton Keynes. This is a classic example of the necessity of tree pruning and management in urban areas, where trees and building are often in very close proximity to each other. After inspecting this tree, the decision was made to give it a full crown reduction, giving it clearance from the house, and allowing more sunlight into the property. With the only other option being a full tree removal, we’re glad that the customers decided to go with crown reduction, thus retaining the tree.
Stump Grinding Milton Keynes
Here at Firwood Tree & Garden Services, we have a wide range of stump grinding machines to tackle almost any stump! We will grind the stump to a suitable depth to allow for: - Landscaping & building works ✅ - Lawn turf or seeding ✅ - Replanting of new trees and shrubs ✅
Boundary reduction on an Oak tree in Maulden, Bedfordshire. Unfortunately, trees and hedges have no concept of the boundary lines between properties, and without regular maintenance from a young age, they can very quickly outgrow their space, and encroach on neigbouring gardens and properties. As you can imagine, this can become a prime cause of neighbourly disputes (Please see our FAQs page for more information on this topic). This Oak tree is a great example of the importance of pruning trees from a young age, to ensure that they remain a manageable size for the area that they inhabit. Unfortunately, boundary reductions rarely look pretty, and they’re not a good option for the tree’s health and balance. However, we understand that sometimes it is the only option.
Large Willow tree pollard in Brogborough, Bedfordshire. Unfortunately, this tree had taken a battering from the storms at the start of the year, resulting in half the tree tearing out. We were called in to clear the fallen half of the tree and evaluate the safety of the remaining tree that was still standing. What was left was a heavily leaning stem that had lost its counterbalance and wind protection, so with that in mind, we decided on a heavy reduction the reduce weight and prevent the likelihood of any further failure. Willows are beautiful trees that really add value to a landscape, however they’re weak, brittle, and susceptible to disease and rot. Without maintenance, Willows will typically grow until they start to disintegrate and fall apart under their own weight. This highlights the importance of having your Willow trees inspected if their failure could impact the safety of you or others around you.
Snowy Maple removal
Our climber Patrick, performing a tree removal on a dead Maple tree, on a very cold and snowy day. At some point this tree had been struck by lightning, which likely led to its downfall and eventual death. With lots of targets below, the decision was made to sectionally dismantle this tree in little pieces, lowering them to the ground with a rope to ensure that nothing below was damaged in the process. Here at Firwood, we have years of experience performing tree removals in tight areas where there’s no margin for error.
Windblown Western Red
Large, fallen, Western Red Cedar tree in Leighton Buzzard. Unfortunately, this very large and beautiful Western Red was another victim of the storms at the start of this year. Under close inspection of the fallen tree, we found a substantial amount of decay and rot, which would have been the weakness in the link so to speak, that made is susceptible to failure. We estimated this tree to be approximately 120ft tall, and after clearing and processing the material, we were left with 6 tonne in woodchip alone! We left the logs on site for the homeowner to be used as firewood. This highlights the importance of having your trees inspected by a qualified arborist to evaluate their safety and condition.
Privet hedge trimming in Eaton Bray, Bedfordshire. This hedge was reduced by approximately 5ft to keep it more manageable for the homeowners.
Spruce tree pruning in Toddington, Bedfordshire. We heavily thinned this Spruce as an alternative to tree topping, with the goal to keep its shape whilst reducing the sail effect, and allow air to pass through the canopy. Doing this greatly reduces the risk tree failing under high winds.
Fallen Eucalyptus in Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire. Unfortunately, this tree was another victim of the storms at the beginning of the year. Under close inspection we found many defects that were clear indicators of ill health, and risk in the tree. We strongly recommend that customers have their trees checked out on a regular basis, that way we can assess their safety and have a better chance of preventing failures before they happen

A quick tidy up of a Hawthorn Hedge for Woburn Forest Growers
As beautiful as they are, unfortunately Willows are a very fast growing and weak species of tree. They will often keep growing until they break apart under their own weight, like this one did. To remedy the problem we Pollard these trees to reduce the leverage on them, and preserve them for as long as possible.
